In fact, t...And I totally agree with the last part. In fact, there have been further articles on Kotaku about Keiji Inafune from Capcom being made head of International R&D and how he wants to "Westernize" the company's offerings more. The era of Japanese games being loved by the world was due to the fact that they did their own thing and (naturally) built games around and marketed to, a Japanese audience. Trying to emulate or assimilate to a Western audience seems to me like it'd be a disaster. If one complimented the other, or took things away from the other, I don't see that as a bad idea, but a lot of 2channers act like if they continue to, "be Japanese about it," that they'll collapse in on themselves like a neutron star. Large companies like Konami are already "outsourcing" games to foreign studios, and the visual results at least to the new Castlevania game (being handled by a Spanish developer with Kojima's overseeing/input) haven't been bad at all. The next Silent Hill title, as well, is being delegated to a Czech developer. As well, Capcom's Dead Rising 2 is being handled by a Canadian studio. The one thing I've noticed, though, is that all of the big titles mentioned above all have a Western bent to them. I don't see them sending a new Ookami or Yakuza or Kenka Banchou title out to France.

Yeah, I actually just had a conversation with a friend about the Pokemon thing. They had read this piece, and the Kotaku article it sort of "grew out of," and was saying, "Well, it is a game series marketed mainly to kids in Japan, and a good size of the market for it abroad is also children," and they were right. I mean, I have 25-30 year-old friends that actually work for a game company that play Pokemon now, but they're mainly marketed to children. And what do children like more than collecting highly-variable, super-powered animals? Why mess with the formula if all they're eager to do in future titles is "Catch Em All"? The only reason it signals stagnation to others is because it's a huge export abroad so naturally detractors will use it as a point with which to pin stagnation on. And proponents can scarcely avoid that when it is so well-known. But all-in-all it's really not so different from coming out with a new Madden or FIFA game every year with slightly improved graphics and updated rosters. Shonen anime is the same way, a friend that used to watch Bleach/Naruto before he started working for a "serious" game company, told me the other day that he tried to watch Bleach after a few years of not watching it, and he simply couldn't because the animation was so bad. And I found myself using that argument on him, just a few days after I had the Pokemon conversation. I said something like, "Oh well you know, they have to make one a week forever until kids get sick of it, kids don't care if Ichigo has 10 frames of animation a second or 60, they're just happy he's kicking ass and performing special attacks that they can run around yelling later." Ironically this is the same friend that thought Pokemon was childish in 1998 but plays fervently now. =P

Thanks for the comment! And my responses when I'm bored get gigantic, ゴメン!Takarahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01251256193556314285noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25003409.post-12643089578006743812010-05-03T00:19:27.621-04:002010-05-03T00:19:27.621-04:00MegaTen is one of those series that - to me at lea...MegaTen is one of those series that - to me at least - never really gets old. The stories don't really change that much, but there's just something refreshing about something based in the present day that isn't totally ridiculous, that doesn't have a million bullets being fired at all times or that doesn't have some sort of zombie apocalypse, lol.

That's actually where I stopped, too. I borrowed FF9 from a friend in college, played through like the first disc and put it down. In 7 there were mini-games and they were okay, kinda dumb, but ultimately benign to the real gameplay. Then in 8 they implemented other things where you needed to keep a consistent salary, collecting magazines, playing some card game, etc. I don't really dislike those elements per se, but when I want to play an RPG it doesn't really enhance things for me to break up the action by playing cards. But my big thing by the time 9 rolled around was that, I'm a completionist by nature, and so if I felt I was playing a game where I'd be missing out on something if I didn't find/do everything I felt like I was missing out. So I'd play using GameFAQs or guides or whatever, checking every few minutes to make sure I didn't miss anything, and that kinda sucked all of the fun out of the game. I actually stopped gaming altogether for about 2-3 years at that point. And I agree, even now anime archetypes have really kind of destroyed FF as a series, for me.

As far as music games are concerned, I think that's an especially "tangled" genre. Early attempts didn't especially catch on well because of specifics and differences in musical tastes. And trying to localize something with cultural bits often just alienates the actual fans that'd buy it for what it is, and confuses people who don't know what it is. And what's more cultural than music? DDR was the big exception, but really, who can explain that phenomenon catching on? And by the time games like Guitar Hero came about they instantly had such a large chunk of the market here that I was really surprised when Rock Band was able to grab a foothold like it did.Takarahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01251256193556314285noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25003409.post-25333303494327899282010-04-25T20:19:52.772-04:002010-04-25T20:19:52.772-04:00Interesting read! With the exception of my beloved Megami Tensei (especially Persona) series, I haven't played a Japanese game in a long time. The derivative characters of Final Fantasy were just too much, and I haven't played since 9 (which I didn't finish).

It's interesting to see how Japan has fallen behind in terms of music games, as well. Not in the arcade, but the Konami Rock Band-style game was just abysmal.

But in the end, Japanese game makers are selling to Japanese gamers, and things like Pokemon are still really popular, even in the United States - despite being the same as the very first game.ebidebbyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02433872736452882213noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25003409.post-25251070981900959912010-04-10T03:49:31.772-04:002010-04-10T03:49:31.772-04:00It says a month, but we'll see... =P They used...It says a month, but we'll see... =P They used to make xmas trees like this when I was little, and I remember them lasting quite a while, so hopefully these are awesome like that.Takarahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01251256193556314285noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25003409.post-11245559310028639462010-04-10T03:46:22.798-04:002010-04-10T03:46:22.798-04:00That little tree is way too f-wken cute, sohow lon...That little tree is way too f-wken cute, sohow long does it last?Gunstrayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02165281054975245881noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25003409.post-19848895959703965612010-04-10T03:22:53.054-04:002010-04-10T03:22:53.054-04:00That is one cute tree you have there^^That is one cute tree you have there^^Gunstrayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02165281054975245881noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25003409.post-3782417856960711922010-04-01T03:03:05.062-04:002010-04-01T03:03:05.062-04:00No, they're unfortunately just individual anim...No, they're unfortunately just individual animal-themed vehicles. I wasn't really talking about gamers in terms of what they play, or their level of play/commitment, but more of their spending habits and if they give a shit about keeping stuff around because they want to look at the spine of a DVD case on their shelf in satisfaction. Like I have two friends: They both make around the same salary but their ways of gaming are very different. The one has like a 27 inch TV, but he picks up the newest games, plays em to the hilt, returns em and gets more games. He doesn't care if he gets a bonus with a preorder, he just wants to play to experience.

The other guy has a room with library-like shelves with his games stored in alphabetical order, by system, with systems and paraphernalia (he used to work at different game stores here for like almost 10 years so he has a shit ton of posters and advertisements and such)put in strategic places, kinda like most DC.com readers would have their rooms set up with Saber figures and Nanoha posters, lol.

Actually, that's a pretty good analogy, I mean there are those people that just go over to crunchyroll or whatever or download fansubs, and merely want to watch anime for the story, or pretty colors or moe moe or whatever. And then there are those who are like me who have a makeshift museum of "goods" that overwhelm their living space because they love characters/anime/manga so much.

Though, through writing this, your argument does kinda mesh with mine pretty well. Because casual gamers, regardless of what they play, generally don't care if they keep their games, let alone collect figures and posters related to their games, etc. But, just like someone who watches an assload of anime every week/month/year doesn't necessarily collect figures or whatever (though I've yet to run into a hardcore otaku that doesn't collect those things ^^;) avid or hardcore gamers don't necessarily keep all their crap, or buy fan-related stuff, either.

Like I said, I think we're having two separate arguments here. I'm just talking about people that "play games to play games" versus those that enshrine their games because they feel a sentimental attachment to their purchases, and really either of those types can be "casual, avid or hardcore", their play style has no bearing on whether they want to keep a copy of Chrono Trigger in a glass case on display for 20 years or sell it on ebay. =P But I totally agree with your definitions of Casual, Avid, Hardcore.Takarahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01251256193556314285noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25003409.post-69544227802290420432010-02-10T20:54:58.618-05:002010-02-10T20:54:58.618-05:00@Gunstray: This whole blurb is actually from a com...@Gunstray: This whole blurb is actually from a comment I left at Kotaku, and I pretty much said I'm the same thing (though I left that part off here, because it seemed out of context XD). I got to that point around the end of the PS1's life cycle and into Dreamcast, and I kinda stopped around 2006 with the PS2. I used to be a total packrat and saved like everything, packaging, instructions, etc. When I started getting more and more into anime & "otaku stuff", those things take up way more space and I had to start socking away games in drawers and systems in the closet, under the bed, etc. I didn't have an overwhelming amount of storage space - still don't, lol. The other part was, I got a CD burner for my birthday in 1999, and high speed internet at college and at home during the summer. Collecting games themselves had kind of an on and off appeal to me, because while I liked the games themselves and the art on the packaging and such, really, what is a physical game more than a blob of grey plastic with a sticker on it, or a CD/DVD? So to experience as much as possible without paying that much I started getting games over IRC and eventually Bittorrent. The Dreamcast was especially easy to play burned stuff on because of the Windows CE architecture. ^^

But yeah, "free games" were a double-edged sword, because I'd get a whole bunch of games for like 2-3 systems and then play each for like 10 min, get bored or think, "I could be playing something else!" and then my attention would be split between 15-20 games. I bothered to get a SwapMagic kit for my PS2, played with that a bit and kinda got out of gaming for a while, mainly because of anime, otaku culture and Danny's site/community (you guys, lol).

So I more or less started offloading all of my games for more space/money to put into figures and such. I still have current gen stuff, but my sentimentality faded and I sold like, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy II (IV), FF III (VI), and all of my old systems. I kind of started asking myself, "You don't even play your news games, when are you actually going to go back and play Super Mario 3 again?" And not only that, emulators can scratch any itch short of current gen systems if I feel like playing an NES game again. And I actually went out and bought a 360 almost 2 years ago now, but I just buy stuff now, for better or worse I'm no longer a "freeloader". =PTakarahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01251256193556314285noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25003409.post-33425016630579540772010-02-09T04:54:26.106-05:002010-02-09T04:54:26.106-05:00I beg to differ, as there are more than just these...I beg to differ, as there are more than just these two classes you must remember the obvious ones casual and hardcore gamers. These two are probably what more are categorized as and usually is wrong as there are many categories in between for example, I am classified as an Avid gamer. It is a step below Hardcore and means that I play a wide range of games/genres and am good at most whilst Hardcore tick to the one game and dominate. You must remember that also even though many gamers trade their games back in, it's usually cause the game doesn't have any replay value..what's the point of playing it through the second time if it won't add to the story, give you an alternate ending or even just give you the satisfaction of completing all the goals achieveable? Games like Bayonetta might get a couple goes through just to pick up everything but after thats there's no real reason to play the game again. You alreayd know the story and if you like the gameplay you would just be sure to pick up more games in the future that carry upon that style of gameplay. I'm not disagreeing with you...just adding xDNaKAhi70https://www.blogger.com/profile/04674826352657641084noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25003409.post-5623395028835572062010-02-06T02:09:04.197-05:002010-02-06T02:09:04.197-05:00I dont seem to fit in any of these types, or I pro...I dont seem to fit in any of these types, or I probably would be in the subgroup, in between; The sentimental Freeloader, name is pretty much lol, since I mainly download games plus the factor of not spending money and the disposability makes it easier if not riskier.Gunstrayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02165281054975245881noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25003409.post-26792803664629805572010-01-17T00:02:46.727-05:002010-01-17T00:02:46.727-05:00Yeah, they're awesome but I don't play wit...Yeah, they're awesome but I don't play with them (or should I say have a big flat surface on which to drive them) enough to warrant paying so much for them. And the rechargeable batteries on the new ones make them more expensive than the old ones (which I like more anyway because they have a tiny controller). But yeah, I don't wanna say they wind up looking the same by the time you have 6-7 of them, but they do look kinda similar side-by-side.Takarahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01251256193556314285noreply@blogger.com
