Another amazing set by Takara Tomy A.R.T.S., also released last year like the Playstation History miniatures I just posted. I realized this several months after their release early last year and managed to hunt the last one from the last seller that had them down on Amazon.co.jp. I guess people actually hold onto these sorts of items/collections, because I've been looking for 2004's "Sega History" for over a year now and have seen a few individual items, but never a complete set, up for bid on Yahoo Japan Auctions. (Unless you count the shady Hong Kong sellers selling a set for $99 on eBay) Ditto this one and the Playstation one as well. The most I could find for this set was a paper card that they stick in the front of the Gashapon machine to advertise what it has inside, and the Playstation set had a few individuals available, but no sets. For being less than a year old and currently available at HLJ, respectively, you'd think that at least one or two sets would be up for sale.

Anyway, this set is definitely amazing if you spent your youth poring over EGM or Diehard Gamefan magazines' import coverage. When the "PS-X" was just a daydream, when everything was still foreign and exotic and something like the Satellaview existed in a far off place you could only dream of traveling to one day. Much like previous sets, this one comes with a nice amount of peripherals as well as cartridges. Both forms of the Super Famicom are represented here, as well as both forms of the Super Gameboy, and those come with cartridges as well! Again, it's astounding how much attention is paid to detail, especially for something that only costs 300yen. Also how it basically covers every bit of first-party hardware the Super Fami had in Japan throughout it's life cycle. This set contains:

Satellaview, access cartridge with RAM cart, AV selector and AC adaptor

Apparently the Super Gameboy 2 released in 1998 in Japan, long after everyone over here in the US had gone over to the N64 or Playstation, and would've even heard of the Katana (Dreamcast) at this point. Japan has a long history of supporting consoles long after they've ceased being in the limelight, the NES was supported long after everyone elsewhere had started playing the SNES in 1991.

Again, all of the models here are top-notch, the doors in the cartridge slots really have springs that open them up and hold the carts in place, the peripherals really plug in, every 1/6 accessory is emblazoned faithfully to it's 6/6 full-sized counterpart with logos and such; the game carts even have tiny warning labels on the back!

No, I didn't go to Blizzcon 2011. I am, however, an eBay user, lol. I got the 2 Murloc figures as a package deal, one is supposed to be themed after Diablo, the other is a Mr. T reference; note the mohawk grenade. The other is a neat little polystone statue of (mini)Tyrael from Diablo 2 & 3.

I think we've established that I love Gashapon toys by now. As much as I love 1/8 figures and such, I adore the small, the tiny, the detailed. And these are great examples of why I love them as much as I do.

Wanroom is a San-X creation which is a pun on "one room (living)". 'Wan' is onomatopoeia for a dog barking in Japanese, so Wanroom naturally lends itself to anthropomorphizing furniture into having dog characteristics.

Anyway, set 1 is comprised of household appliances that all have gimmicks (and cute dog faces prominently displayed):

Wan-channel/ワンチャンネル is a TV whose face flips/changes
Wan-range/ワンレンジ is a microwave with a rotating piece of meat inside
Wan-nabe/ワンナベ is a pot with multicolored beads inside that pop like pop-o-matic Trouble when pushed
Wan-toaster/ワントースター is a toaster with bread that pops up, that also has a face on it
Inu-sofa/イヌソファー is the least interesting of the bunch, in that it has a "wan-cushion" attached by a cord

As for set 2, they're just molded plastic, but most come inside of a tiny, tiny moving box with printing and even a tiny seal on it! And of course, the obligatory dog face:

Broken Camera and iPhone 4S Acquisition

This past week or so I wound up getting an iPhone 4S, which has a vastly superior camera to my 2008 model from before. Animal Crossing Museum どうぶつの森博物館

Finally got pretty much the only remaining Animal Crossing playset that I'm actually interested in: the museum. I got the enhanced Conbini that was only available as a mail-in prize in Japan as well as the shrine and 2-story house. There are still a few citizen animals as well as a few furniture elements I want, as well as Kappei and the rowboat, but these seem to be getting more and more scarce on Yahoo Japan Auctions these days. That's why I was so surprised that I got this for only 370yen.

It comes with a "Hooter" figure, naturally because he's the curator of the museum. Like the other sets, it sits on a grass plate and has dividers for all of the sections: fish, fossils, art and bugs. It's pretty simplistic, being built like a larger version of one of the homes; in that it is empty inside until furnished. No fixtures to speak of, but that's the fun of these, isn't it?

Just the other day, by way of HLJ (no rhyming intended) I got these awesome little gashapon 1/6 replicas of the "Playstation History". There are 6 in the set (I got 8 capsules in 1 box and only got 5 of the 6, but the small paper inserts assert that 2 models are secrets, so I'm guessing each box only contains 1 secret model) and each comes with a different set of peripherals as well as a game and its case. For being so small, they're ridiculously detailed, with accurately painted buttons as well as miniscule memory cards and Pocketstations. Each peripheral can be plugged into the PS itself and each PS has a tiny disc and case with included labels that can be applied. The Playstations' lids open as well and the games can actually be inserted! The only thing missing is the ability to actually play them on a TV.

The PS consoles themselves are represented through 6 different models in this set (though there aren't any physical differences between the gray models, the paper that they come with lists them as different models), and like I said, there are 6 sets overall:

Has the opening screen + some extra sprites from the first Super Mario Bros game on it, so it was most definitely an instant buy for me. The others had Mario amongst a bunch of coins and illustrations of the characters. Can be had here.

Tokyoflash Japan Kisai Seven

I got the brand new Kisai Seven watch from Tokyoflash Japan just the other day. The Seven has a really awesome, futuristic looking design with a blue LED that glows softly and brightens as it comes on, dims gradually as it shuts off. It was also available in white, but I thought that, that would be too showy/gaudy, and besides I just liked the blue more than the white, it has more character.

You tell the time by looking at the dark spots on the LED rings. The inner ring represents the hour, the outer, 5 minute intervals. The two "sevens" (hence the name) on the outside light up one LED for each individual minute. So, let's say that the minute ring is at 35, and the seven-shape has 2 LEDs lit, it's 37 after the hour. It takes a little getting used to, but if you've bought a watch from Tokyoflash or other crazy-designer watch companies before, you know their methodology can be creative to work around not being able to cram 60 individual LEDs into the face of the watch.

It of course has a rechargeable battery much like a lot of LED Tokyoflash watches do, like my Satellite did. This rechargeablity enables it to have a constant animation mode, animation every 30 seconds, or animation every 5 minutes. The constant mode was kind of disappointing, as if you turn it on, it fades and comes back instead of staying on constantly, as I thought it would. This turning on constantly or even every 30 seconds would be impossible with most other watches, unless you felt like buying a new battery every week or so. Because it is rechargeable, you can use the function as much as you want, without worry, and even if you do manage to run it down, the replacement batteries are cheap, too. Plus, it can be recharged in the neighborhood of like 300~400 times before needing replaced, so unless you wear it everyday, you're not gonna need a new one for quite some time.

The strap was kind of a double-edged sword for me. See, in the vein of being future-y, the Seven has a butterfly clasp under the band, thus concealing itself and making you appear more like Tron or Timecop or whatever. The downside to not just tucking in the band and being on your merry way is that you then need to trim it to your wrist's size. They advise doing this with scissors, which I will admit is an easy process, however as careful as I was about it, I wound up trimming down the one side too far, and then the pin would stick through the side, and the rubber covering it was very thin on the end. So I trimmed it one more "link" down and then it was too short and the clasp kept coming open on its own because the band was then too tight against my wrist. So I superglued the one with the almost open end back on and it has actually held pretty well through the first 4 days of normal wear to my job, outside, etc. But Tokyoflash actually said they'd send me a replacement strap after I contacted them (they're sending it with another watch I purchased, so how could they say no? lol), so that's a real bright spot.

Again, the watch itself is amazingly well-designed, it's positively Tron-ish and I'm super glad I bought the Seven. It also seems to be popular, because my Youtube video of it has gotten a couple hundred views in the few weeks since I've gotten it. I started posting videos of my watches not only because I think that they're neat/cool and should be shared with the world at large, but because a lot of people don't seem to put videos or even pictures up about their watches, and it's really difficult to find info on a lot of these obscure watches made in limited numbers by smaller - but by all means better - companies like Seahope or Tokyoflash. I always went looking for something that wasn't the stock photos/videos that the company took, of these watches to make sure of what it'd really look like in the color I chose, and now I'm trying to provide that for others so they know what it'll really look like once they get it. Anyway, it's a great watch, perfect conversation starter, and one I wholeheartedly recommend buying if you're a fan of this type of design/style. Another win from Tokyoflash Japan!

WWR World War Robot Large Martin Big Red Colorway & WWR Book

Another Large Martin colorway, this time a broad contrast to the drab brown and rust and green of the last one I got. Also snagged the book all of these toys are based on, off of Amazon. I gotta say, it was really cheap - $23.95 - especially considering it's an art book and it's the collected works (the original spanned 2 volumes, and this condensed version contains an extra few pages of art + story) of both volumes, hardbound. Some of Ashley Wood's stuff is just great, but there are a few in here that I could barely make out what was supposed to be in the painting, like an amorphous blob sometimes. Stories were entertaining, too.

Seahope Scope Watch シーホープのSCOPE腕時計

I am overjoyed by this watch. I'll just throw it out there from the start. The craftsmanship is ridiculous, the design is ridiculous. What the Kisai Satellite I previously posted about is to looking sci-fi-y, this watch is to looking like an action hero or secret agent. Much like most of the watches I buy, this one has a unique look to it, but Eleeno/Seahope takes uniqueness to a new level.

The way you view the time is on a grid, where horizontal is 5 minute intervals, vertical is the hour and then the "scope" at the top lights up with 4 individual LEDs showing one for every 1 minute. Another awesome thing simply built-in to the watch face is, the 'O' in 'SCOPE' sets the time/date. Again, yes, it's "complicated" and you have to do some addition, and yes, it isn't "always on", because then the battery would be depleted very quickly and you'd miss out on the cool animation when you beseech your wrist oracle for the time, but I think it's well worth it. Actually, my only real beef with it was that the button on the front was odd/hard to press and when you're setting the time you only have about 4 seconds before it resets back to non-setting regular watch mode. I had to wrestle with it for a good 20 mins when I got it out of the box. It was actually easier to remove the links I needed to remove to make it fit my wrist, which is no mean feat. All in all though, this has become my favorite watch thus far, and I can wear it casually, and it looks good when you're dressed up, too, so bonus points for that.

TokyoFlash Kisai Satellite Black and Green Watch 東京フラッシュKisai Satellite腕時計

The Satellite is my first purchase from TokyoFlash Japan, and judging by its quality and overall presentation, the first of many. First, the watch itself is very well-designed and crafted from high quality materials. TokyoFlash's watches are all limited edition, so I can only assume the production batches are small and better controlled quality-wise.

When you press the button on the right side of the watch, it springs to life and flashes the time in 3 separate circles (hour, 10 min intervals, 1 min, yes you have to be able to add, here), seemingly orbiting each other ('satellites', get it?). I wrestled for around 2 weeks with the decision of what color to get, seeing as I want a lot more watches, this watch is $100 and there are 4 variations of this, which all look cool in their own right. There are blue and green LCDs as well as black and white straps, so 4 combinations, and I whittled it down gradually. While blue looks cool, I'm partial to green for "futuristic" things because I feel that green actually looks more futuristic. (However, the blue does look cool, and picking green a lot gets kinda old) And as far as the strap, while white looks cool, I obsess over blemishes, and dirt/scuffs/etc would show up on white very easily. Also black looks more future-y, white looks like you're an art school kid or something, to me anyway, lol. I did like the white, especially since there was a lot of contrast, but ultimately I went with the black + green combo.

Between the hours of 6PM and 12AM, the watch has an animation function that can be turned on and off, and the satellites "orbit" every 15 minutes. The LCD stays off until you press a button (as I mentioned above), as it would drain the battery if it was constantly on. The 'Kisai' logo even lights up ever so slightly when the watch is activated. As I said, overall a very classy presentation. It comes in its own specially-designed box, as well.

The feel of the watch is comfortable, light and the material is of high quality. The screen is recessed into the strap, which is kind of unique, and the actual face seems to be set deep into the smoky acrylic facade. The best part of the whole package, however, is the fact that this watch (and the majority of their newer models, it seems) contains a rechargeable battery that can be charged via an included USB cord.

I stumbled upon TokyoFlash a few years back, actually, presumably when they first came on the scene, but I actually forgot about them soon after (I don't know how) and it was only recently that I restumbled upon their site while I was looking for an alternate retailer to buy a Seahope watch at (as Seahope's site has been "down for revamping" for some time now and they tell you to buy from their Rakuten store, but Rakuten's shipping is kinda confusing and seems expensive). They are an amazing retailer, they ship fast (I got my watch in under 5 days from Singapore - yes, they're TokyoFlash Japan, and are apparently based in both Japan and Singapore) and their contact is fast, too.

Overall, this is a good watch for everyday wear, in my opinion, because I tend to worry about metal faces and straps while I'm working or whatnot. With an acrylic face and a polyurethane strap, it is very easy to forget about potentially damaging this watch.

Zenryoku Usagi Trading Figures 全力ウサギトレーディングフィギュア

Coming from Ningyoushi.com - a wonderful Californian web retailer for designer/vinyl toys - these are trading figures from the 2008 anime series based on a bunch of 'full-power' (zenryoku) rabbits working construction, but none of the stories really revolve around construction. 'Zenryoku' can also mean "with all of your strength" or "doing your best," too which is what the running gag/theme of the show is. All of the rabbits do their best at everything. The style kinda reminds me of Keroro Gunsou, particularly the main usagi himself. These are all really neat, each of which coming with different signs/slogans. For some reason I really love the logo's design.

Huck Gee Gold Life Dunnys

A new set of Dunnys has dropped, this time all made by Huck Gee. They're dubbed "Gold Life" and they're totally Asian-inspired, mostly Japanese, but by way of that odd Western way of looking at "Asian" as a universal thing. A few of the figures in this set are boring, imo, like the geisha models, and the er, "human" figures are kinda ubiquitous. For instance, I didn't buy the ninjas in this set because I have the Fox Ninja from the Dunny 2011 set that HG designed and he looks better (again, imo). I bought the highlights, sans the Wandering Monk and Tazmo the Rifleman due to insanity of prices of chase figures on ebay. I did, however, get the Shinsengumi Panda (not what he's called in the set, again, something Western), a samurai-armor-clad rhino and Gold Claw, a white tiger with awesome claws, a cloth cape and a straw hat.

ThreeA World War Robot: Large Martin Auspublic Region Defense Colorway

From Ashley Wood, an Australian artist, comes a brand new - non-Japanese(!) - way of draining my wallet! I can't remember where I stumbled upon these, but I instantly thought these were amazing. Apparently it all started with an Ashley Wood set of artbooks called "World War Robot", about wars being fought between the earth, moon and Mars with humans and megacorporations making robot armies to supply the mayhem and fill their coffers. Well, that's the long and short of it anyway. So naturally, nothing like these paintings/drawings could stay two-dimensional forever, and ThreeA began making designer toys based on the series.

The way I understand it, the "official shop", Bambaland, gets first crack at selling these as preorders, and then they get released to distributors/comic shops/etc. And just to show you that the Japanese don't have the market cornered on gimmicks, each WWR toy released is one basic model, with different "colorways" available. Colorway is another word for "variant" or "repaint", if you're familiar with toy collecting vernacular. Unlike your typical (non polystone, non coldcast) Japanese figure, however, some seem to show up in random, small numbers, and others have a glut released. For instance, the colorway above only cost $45, but on ebay, I bought a rarer model called "MK2 Bertie" that was $140. And there are some, like for instance a special Japanese release, that can go for like $500 or more. I think some are like shop-specific or show-specific models, but there are others like the African Bramble units - that seem no different and are sold by a great many shops, mind you - that are inexplicably like $250-$300 at retail.

I have to say, these are really well-painted, detailed toys. For something being mass-produced, they're weathered well, packaged well, and despite having a simplistic shape, the Large Martins evoke an oddly steampunk sort of imagery. The Bertie I got has a minigun and individually bendable fingers, so I look forward to seeing more of a level of detail with that model (as soon as I decide to take it out of the box, haven't found space for it yet and I don't want it to get damaged), but I think I've found a new thing to collect. And apparently there's a decent amount of interest in WWR all over, as they're currently making a movie due out in 2013, based on the stories in the art books.

Fourth in the series of Black Rock Shooter Nendos, she has fairly unique limbs and the ubiquitous linoleum-floor/chessboard stand.

From the BRS Wiki:

Strength uses mechanized weaponry. Her arms are made up of two huge mechanical arms called "Ogre Arm". She has a robotic tail with a vertebrae-like design that can move freely and her feet are metal stilts. She has a black hood with white flames on it and white ribbons at the base of her tail and knee highs. She has white eyes and short white hair as well.
Unlike in huke's artwork, however, in the OVA, Strength's eyes are hazel (with the circular pattern akin to all "other selves") instead of white. The reason for this change is unknown, but it is very likely done to give a connection point to Yuu, as she is the only other character with hazel eyes and eyes are used as a connection point for "other selves".

Shunya Yamashita has broken through from the world of bishoujo super heroines to the world of non-existent movie bishoujo. Like this figure a lot, especially from far away, but up close her face is sorta borked. I don't know how to describe it, but her lips and eyes seem kinda off. As I said, I like her a lot, her sculpt overall is nice, curvaceous, the uniform is spot on (for what part of it is actually there, lol) and her pose is well-chosen. The little Ghostbusters elements, like the trap and proton pack/gun and goggles are really cool, though I wish the manhole cover's Ghostbusters logo was full-color and not just gray.

Another Rockman 8-bitified strap collection. I love this set because it features the robot bosses from the first game. Too many Rockman toys/collectibles focus on him, Protoman/Blues, Roll, Rush, etc etc. The colors on these straps, as with the last set are super vivid, so they definitely "pop". The two secret straps this time are Dr. Wily prostrating himself on the ground (i.e. - after he's defeated in the games) and the other (one I didn't get, there are 9 in each set, but a box only contains 8 straps) is apparently Sniper Joe, the one-eyed robot ubiquitous throughout all of the early Megaman games.

Time for more collectibles from my favorite series: Rockman! It's hard to believe that Megaman is almost a quarter of a century old (next year!). I was really anticipating these, as I fell in love with them the second I laid eyes on them. Whoever designed these did such a good job making them all miniature and SD. They also picked some of the best bosses to include, Snakeman, Skullman, Elecman, Airman... Right down the box design, you can tell a lot of care goes into the GCC (Game Characters Collection) line, though I have to admit bias to loving the series they've done so far, Megaman, Persona 3, 4, soon 2. Although, I can never understand the inclusion of Roll in these sets, can someone explain it to me? Oh, and the secret is regular blue bomber Megaman with his helmet off.

Hmmmm, what to say about these figures, what indeed. They're not terrible, they're not poorly made, they're actually very well made for trading figures, intricately detailed, varied in pose, but they do have one problem that a lot of Japanese toys have: their stand. Most Japanese toys aren't free-standing, and whether they're poseable or not, they usually include some sort of stand or even more - a system of some sort to pose them. But in quite a few instances, companies take liberties with these stands, or get creative, and the solutions they come up with get downright awful at times. Early Nendoroid stands were hideous, with just a 3/4 ring that fit around the figure's waist to hold them up. When you design something to be SD (with a big head, yeah, like that), you kinda want something that's going to hold your top-heavy figure up. My Death Note Nendos all have marks on their heads from where they fell so many times onto my shelf before I finally took it upon myself to replace or tune up their stands. Recently, a few companies have started putting magnets in various places (back of the head, feet) on their figures. I am a HUGE fan of this method, and luckily some Nendos have adopted this design ethic. Before the magnet method, I was a great fan of the "peg in the foot" method. That said, to my knowledge I've never bought a CM's Corporation trading figure product before, but they easily have the worst stand system of anything I've ever seen. First, the stands included consist of the ubiquitous upside-down petri dish-shaped plastic disc to stand the figure on, which would've been easy enough to just put a peg on and be done with it. But, as I said, all of the figures have vastly different poses, so I'm thinking they were trying to save money by producing non-unique stands. Each figure also comes with a plastic model-like "rack" of little pipes and pegs and things that look like incomplete bubble wands to help stand the figure. This wouldn't be such an issue if any of the figures had holes in them or obvious places to put the support parts in/on/through. Also, all of the plastic parts are cheap, rigid, brittle plastic that will splinter or break fairly easily. In the case of one figure, the monk, I had to lean her on a peg awkwardly. It's just strange that such nicely done figures would have such a moronic, poorly produced support included with them. Much worse than the Disgaea 4 figures I got a few months back, with magnets in their feet and full color, metallic bases to stick them to that work like a dream. ^^ Also odd, but cute, is the inclusion of a farmer figure, lol.

This figure prompted me to ask myself why I don't have more 1/8 male figures, lol. And of course, the answer is that they simply don't make that many of em. At any rate, this figure of Kenshin is more than welcome in my collection. Any figure of Kenshin is welcome in my collection, for that matter, since any non trading figure style figures from Rurouni Kenshin are so few and far between. It is well done - your standard 1/8 Megahouse fare, really, in terms of level of detail and overall sculpting. He comes with 2 heads, one normal, one battousai mode head. I really hope this means that yes, there will be a remake of the Kenshin TV series, as had been alluded to earlier this year.

Adding on to the last post, designer toys have gotten so popular in the last few years, that popular franchises have gotten in on the act. Futurama, The Simpsons, South Park, Family Guy and now Street Fighter have all had lines designed for them. The Street Fighter line - debuted in early July - is especially impressive, representing all 12 of the original World Warriors sporting alternate colors for quite a few of the characters. My favorites of the bunch have to be Dhalsim (his necklace and yoga fire accessory are both awesome), Sagat and Balrog, who I have yet to get.

Dunnys are a designer/art toy line created by KidRobot. Several collections of these are released every year, all designed by artists that usually contribute 1-2 designs per set. As designer toys have become a legit medium in the mid-part of the last decade, these toys and their designers have their own cult following, and some artists have really gotten a foothold designing for sets like these. The sets are usually themed, like Britain, or animals, or graffiti or somesuch design scheme that the artist has to adhere to. There are also sets that are numbered with a year, like "Dunny 2011" for example, where the artists do like a free design sorta thing. And as is the rule with blind box designer toys, these sets have "chase figures" which have a ratio of discovery of like 1/80 or less and can be quite valuable. In the latest sets they've even gone to things like "golden tickets" where, when you find one you can send it in for an ultra-rare handmade Dunny, some of which go for several hundred dollars on ebay.

A lot of these figures have crazy quality and are made of lots of different materials, thus making them quite varied and even though they're all based off of the same basic Dunny mini figure, they definitely don't look the same. For example, there's a design that looks like a gumball machine, the little plastic balls inside the head shake around inside, or with another one shaped like a cute lion, it has a furry mane, a Dunny from the Azteca line has a huge stone head and gems in its eyes. Another, shaped like a gorilla, is flocked and 100% fuzzy all over. They also sell blank Dunnys of different shapes and sizes, where you can make your own custom figure. If you Google "custom Dunnys", you'll find never ending galleries of creativity from budding designer toy artists everywhere, famous and non!

A watch from SquEnix's mail-in service via Shonen GanGan back in like 2006, I found an obi from an FMA manga the one day recently and never realized that it even existed back then. So I decided to hop on YJA and lo and behold, I found one for only like 5000yen (they were something like 8000 at retail). It runs on inertia, meaning you charge it up by swinging your arm while walking with it on, or shaking it or whatever. I know that tech has been around for a long time, but this is the first watch I've owned with it. It's fairly hefty, the design is really neat, like whenever something is transmuted in the series, with 2 Flamel crosses on either side, and you can't really see it well in the pic I took, but the back has a visible moving element when the watch is ticking. It came in a really neat embossed box with a case and a chain, wrapped around a pillow, all in all an amazing set up for a watch under $100.

If you've ever played any of the Megami Tensei, Shin Megami Tensei, Persona or Devil Summoner series, you already know that you summon and use demons, kami, monsters, gods and spirits to do battle for you, and that these are usually based on real myths and legends. Some of these are well-known in the west like Thor, Beelzebub, Shiva, etc, but others like some of the Japanese kami are less known to western players. Back in 2005, Kotobukiya started the coolest collection of 6 sets or so of mini trading figures of popular and not-so-popular summons from various games in the MegaTen series. Taira no Masakado, along with Yoshitsune and Susanoo represent the kami section of the games very well in this series (Though Masakado and Yoshitsune fall more into the "real people" category). His name plate is unique in the series - in that, his is printed vertically (ala traditional Japanese writing) whereas the others are all printed horizontally. It gives him quite a unique feel.

The real Taira no Masakado (taken from Wikipedia) was a member of the Kammu Taira clan of Japan. He was the son of Taira no Yoshimochi, Chinjufu Shogun. His childhood name was Soma Kojiro. Taira no Masakado was a powerful landowner in the Kanto region. He is regarded as the first bushi because he was the first to lead a self-governing party.

Masakado killed his uncle Kunika who was part Taira. The central government in Kyoto responded by putting a bounty on his head, and fifty-nine days later his cousin Sadamori, whose father Masakado had attacked and killed, and Fujiwara no Hidesato, killed him at the Battle of Kojima in 940 and took his head to the capital.

The head found its way to Shibasaki, a small fishing village on the edge of the ocean and the future site of Edo, which later became Tokyo. It was buried. Masakado's grave, which is located in the present day Otemachi section of Tokyo, was on a hill rising out of Tokyo Bay at the time. Through land reclamation over the centuries, the bay has receded some three kilometers to the south.

Over the centuries, Masakado became a demigod to the locals who were impressed by his stand against the central government, while at the same time feeling the need to appease his malevolent spirit. The fortunes of Edo and Tokyo seemed to wax and wane correspondingly with the respect paid to the shrine built to him at the kubizuka — neglect would be followed by natural disasters and other misfortunes. Hence, to this day, the shrine is well maintained, occupying some of the most expensive land in the world in Tokyo’s financial district facing the Imperial Palace.

Other shrines which he is deity of include Kanda Shrine (神田明神) and Tsukudo Jinja (which has multiple locations.)

His tomb (which contains only a monument to his head) is near exit C5 of Tokyo's Otemachi subway station.

All that fits with the pretty imposing image that Atlus has given him in the game, ne?

Megahouse seems to have a fixation with pairing up licensed series with Wonderland, but they do it well, so I have no complaints. Gin-san and company were subject to this mashup a few months ago and I loved that set, so when I saw the One Piece cast + donuts + Wonderland, I snatched up a box. Everyone has that Victorian style, there are certain characters in chairs that come with table pieces to complete the tea party effect, along with chara like Sanji serving. A very cute set overall! I particularly like the way Usopp is done, Chopper and Robin are cute, too. Brook is kinda awesome looking as well, but he's kinda "side-heavy" and even though they give you a cane to prop him up with on the back of his chair, it doesn't sit in there very well and he winds up falling over. I finally got him to stay by some miracle (and tilting him a bit), but it was super annoying to get right.

These are kinda neat, if not all gimmick. First, the banks are super small and only hold a few coins. Second, the box makes a point of stating that only up to 100yen coins fit inside - specifically 500yen coins don't fit. Anyway, when you insert a coin, a little lever in the slot is pressed and a noise from the game is made. It lists a specific sound in a little icon by each block's picture, and while each one does produce one sound unique to it, each makes some of the same sounds, it's strange, but cool. My only real gripe is that the images aren't printed on the blocks, they're stickers affixed to the front, which makes them look a little cheap. Overall, though, they're neat little conversation pieces.

I was amazed by how big & vibrant these ended up being. They're made of thick rubber, and their colors really pop, especially for only using 8 colors across the whole set. There are only 8 straps in each box, but 9 in the set (7 + 2 secret), so it's impossible to get the whole set in one box. However, I'm glad that I got the secret that I did - the 1up and the E-Tank - because the other one is an 8-bit rendition of Bass/Forte, which, mreh. (I peeked on Yahoo Japan Auctions to see what it was, and of course several were up for sale/bid) I really can't wait for the next set, the robot masters from the first game are the stars.

Just the first 2 sets of figures in a collection of 4 or 5 (mini figures, there are actually a few OTHER sets of slightly larger figures, too, as well as a Mr. Saturn collection), which, unfortunately for me were going for over $120 a set because they were both coveted and amongst that month's arcade prize in Game Centers across Japan. I never bothered to go back and get the other sets, or to even see if they went down in price eventually, but I assume that they're probably still crazy expensive, given the relative rarity of MOTHER/Earthbound collectibles - yes, even in Japan - and the popularity of the series in Japan. These are neat because they look just like the original clay sculptures in the manual/game guide for the games - you know, when games had some creativity and original concepts to them and required imagination to play as well as make. If you've never played the original MOTHER, it's difficult, but fun. Earthbound is what most people know of the MOTHER series in the west, a masterpiece, and an amazing high point of the 16-bit era of gaming.

Another awesome thing I've known about for a few years but only got around to obtaining now. I found the Mario one in stock (oddly enough I don't recall seeing Ice Climber, and Zelda was sold out) on a now-defunct website when these were being used as prizes in Game Centers in 2005. I managed to snap it up, but I saw the other 2 on the box and really, really wanted them all when I saw how neat the Mario one was. In addition to the fact that they look like the original Famicom carts, they use the "Nintendo 8-bit font" for all of the buttons, have a game screen from the individual game they're intended to represent on the inside, and best of all they play sounds from the games when you hit the = key! Also - and I didn't know this until I got the other two - when you input the year that the game was made (printed on the calculator itself) and hit =, it makes a hidden "easter egg" noise from the game. Zelda makes the whistle/recorder noise, I was so geeked when I heard it play. You, too, can listen to the sound effects from all 3 in the videos I've posted. ^^

There were a total of 4 of these Vocaloid Vignettes made as a collection for Sega arcades last year in Japan. I managed to get the 2 Miku ones (I wanted the other 2, too, but honestly I forgot about them until I was kickin these updates out from old folders) which are both mega-cute. This one is sakura-themed, though it's hard to tell because her head/hair cover most of the sakura. ^^;
