Shenmue and the ambition of an awkward age of growing pains

Today, I got an e-mail from GenkiVideoGames.com that had Shenmue 2 as a 'new arrival' at the top of it. It had been a while since I'd seen Shenmue mentioned anywhere, (and this is quite a feat, since, if you know me, you know that I spend a goodly bit of my time concentrating on retro games) let alone Shenmue 2. Each time I encounter it anymore, Shenmue always reminds me of two things right away: that oddly nostalgic feeling of, back then, thinking of how this was, "The start of the future." How - when it actually took time to get info on games, monthly print magazines were still pervasive, and gaming sites were not nearly as numerous and competitive and were only updated a few times a day - every little bit of information built up into this world of sorts, and in a day where there was no such thing as a "developer diary", seeing things come along like that was a rarity.

The other thing was, still is and always has been, that I remember an early article in which it was stated that Shenmue was intended to have something like 26 chapters, which I was blown away by. Especially in light of the fact that over 10 years later there have only been 2 entries in the series released (so far). Even more surprising is the fact that this is a Japanese game and nothing else has been done in nearly 12 years. Japanese creators have always had a knack for continuing their work in other mediums: OAVs, manga, anime, live action... Shenmue even flirted with this, with something that'd take hypnosis by space aliens in the west, to happen. (And remember, this was in the time before computer animated movies were a viable, mainstream, popular art form with anyone other than kids) They released, into actual Japanese theaters, a cut-together version of all of the cut scenes and QuickTime events as played by expert players, as a movie. This footage was released on a DVD with the Xbox version of Shenmue 2 in the west, as the first game was never released on anything but the Dreamcast, and I guess they wanted players who hadn't played the first game to be able to get up to speed without having to have a whole other system.

I remember how ridiculous I was about games back in the day. I actually bought a Japanese Dreamcast 3 months before the US release because I wanted to play Marvel Vs Capcom at home so badly. Then, I bought the US version when it came out. And again, I was so rabid for Shenmue that when the Japanese version released, I jumped online to an importer and bought the limited edition, and then the US version when it came out. I also remember clumsily trying to parse through the Japanese in the game back then when my skills weren't quiiiiiiiite as good as they are today. But then I remember hating the dubbing and localization of the western version, and going back to the J-version.

But I also remember that Shenmue was about the first game that I'd seen that had that much hype that the end product looked as good as what was shown at trade shows, the still-very-young E3, Tokyo Game Show when it was still relevant, etc. I miss that era that you now only hear about in talk about the past - usually with Japanese developers - like Iwata Asks on Nintendo's website, or sites like Did You Know Gaming. That ambition and experimental nature that companies risked before giant teams worked on, and pervasive committee thinking and focus group mentality dictated things due to necessity of profits

NERDS!

I'll be so glad when this "it's hip to be a nerd" fad passes. The latest salvo of stupidity fired is this awful looking reality show on TBS called King of the Nerds, to air in a tie up with their 1000-times-a-week syndicated showings of CBS' dreadful The Big Bang Theory. Why do I hate this fad, that show, and the stupidass reality show premiering this week? Well, you needn't look any further than one of the contestants on King of the Nerds. There's a girl on the commercial that has pink hair, and upon seeing her, I said, I guarantee you this girl is a poseur gamer. Bingo. She is. And what do poseur girl gamers play? WORLD OF WARCRAFT! Of course.

This drove me to distraction when I went around with the otaku set, and it bugs the shit out of me now. This girl plays one or two games, pretends to like "retro" or classic games, or Pokemon or Maple Story or whatever game or game that has message boards or forums devoted to it, where she can be an attention whore and whip attention-starved boys into a frenzy over her "unique" look and attitude. I call bullshit on it. It's disingenuous. And this girl will win this stupid contest on this equally stupid show, because the show will be disingenuous, too. A quick glance at all of her online bullshit, like her "vlog" (yeah, you don't want attention, why not just make a fucking podcast?) she has a variation of that stupidly antagonizing line that all poseurs use: "yeah, I'm that kinda nerd, judge me."

Like most people that haven't committed a crime, don't feel the need to say "I'm innocent," most nerds don't feel the need to proclaim so in the first sentence of introducing themselves. Just be honest with yourself, you're an insecure person that seeks out attention that just happens to like playing one or two video games. If you didn't have breasts, you'd be just another pale fat/skinny dude playing in the time sink, gearing up your Belf Pally to raid with 24 other milquetoasts. I've known many girl gamers, or girls that can be one of the guys, it's nothing special or rare, really. You burp? WOW! I didn't know girls could do that! You chat casually about things and make vaguely playful sexual innuendo with the guys? HOLY SHIT! Again, you're a tease because you crave followers of your "unique" lifestyle. She says as much in the commercial, that she has an online following.

I partially understood this with anime/manga otaku. Anime and manga and eroge can be (and often times are) really shallow and just based on sexual conquest for repressed nerdy dudes that have perverse or unrealistic expectations about what a woman should be; a thinly veiled genre story that is little more than fetish porn. And that's the way that the real girls trended. I honestly can't even remember the name of the one girl from here in the US, but she basically went on YouTube and spoke totally elementary Japanese phrases in a cutesy voice and looked vaguely like an underage moe girl. Another was Applemilk, also of YouTube, that was a total poseur, but somehow ingratiated herself into the otaku community because her mommy and daddy bought her a trip to Japan for getting all Cs in high school chemistry or something, and she wound up making AVs (the acronym for "adult videos" in Japan, for the uninitiated). But with gaming, I almost expect more from gamers.

I'm not saying you can't look unique, I'm not saying you can't be a woman and love games, I'm not saying any of that. But when you're basically whoring yourself out because you have an unending thirst for attention, get over yourself, do everyone a favor and play games on your own time.

Amazingly Retro: CLICK Keypad Watch

A "retro-tech" watch by CLICK watches that resembles a keyboard's numeric pad. Each key has an embedded LED and when you press any number the current time will light up. For example, in the video, when I press the button 1-2-3-9 lights up, indicating that it is 12:39. There is also a 24-hour/military time mode you can activate. By pressing the # key, the date is shown in the same fashion (in this case 0-4-2-9, or April 29th). I got mine from Watchismo, here, where quite a few colors/varieties are available for purchase. There are even new summer colors that look kinda like ice cream flavors, I totally wanna take a bite out of the orange one!
